2. Product Features
Extremely lightweight: The density of magnesium alloy is about 1.74g/cm³, which is about 35% lighter than aluminum alloy (2.7g/cm³) and about 78% lighter than steel (7.8g/cm³). The steering wheel made of magnesium alloy can significantly reduce the weight of the vehicle, helping to improve the vehicle's acceleration performance, handling flexibility and fuel economy. High strength and high rigidity: Although magnesium alloy is light, it has excellent strength and rigidity. At a unit weight, its strength is close to that of aluminum alloy, and it can well withstand the various dynamic loads on the steering wheel during vehicle driving, ensuring the precise transmission and stable response of driving operations, and providing drivers with a reliable control experience.
Excellent shock absorption performance: Magnesium alloy has excellent damping and shock absorption capabilities, which can effectively absorb vibrations from the road and collision energy during vehicle driving. Good airbag compatibility: Our magnesium alloy steering wheel frame adopts an integrated die-casting process. This structural design gives it extremely high strength and can reliably withstand the strong impact generated by the explosion of the airbag. In contrast, traditional iron frames usually adopt a welded structure, which has certain disadvantages in strength. 3. Process and Manufacturing
Careful selection of alloy materials: Aluminum is used as the main alloying element, and the toughness and castability of the alloy are comprehensively considered. For safety-critical components such as steering wheels, we use AM60 material from the low-aluminum AM series magnesium alloy. This material has certain casting properties while ensuring high strength (tensile strength σb ≥ 200MPa, yield strength σs ≥ 130MPa) and good toughness (elongation δ ≥ 6%, 50mm gauge length), meeting the molding requirements of complex steering wheel structures.
Advanced die-casting molding technology: The die-casting process uses high pressure and high speed filling, which can accurately produce thin-walled, complex-shaped castings with small holes and threads, and can also realize die-casting of inlays. This process effectively improves the strength and surface hardness of the magnesium alloy steering wheel. During the die-casting process, we strictly control various process parameters, such as keeping the filling temperature at 700℃, setting the die temperature at 220℃, and the punch speed at 2.34m/s, to ensure that the ideal steering wheel skeleton is obtained. The process qualification rate of magnesium alloy steering wheels produced by this process is equivalent to that of aluminum alloy steering wheels, reaching more than 85%.
Perfect follow-up treatment: In order to further improve product performance and quality, we carry out comprehensive follow-up treatment on the steering wheel after die casting, including heat treatment of load-bearing parts to optimize the internal structure of the material and improve its comprehensive mechanical properties; at the same time, fine machining and surface treatment are carried out to ensure that the dimensional accuracy, surface finish and appearance texture of the steering wheel meet high standards.
4. Product specifications and performance testing
Specification parameters: Product size, shape, etc. can be customized according to customer needs. In terms of dimensional accuracy, the tolerance range is strictly controlled to ensure perfect fit with the vehicle.
Performance testing: Every magnesium alloy steering wheel undergoes rigorous performance testing. In the fatigue test, the center of the steering wheel is fixed, and a force of ±250kN is repeatedly applied in the vertical direction at the rim until the steering wheel breaks. The measured number of cycles is the fatigue life of the steering wheel skeleton. After testing, the average fatigue life of the steering wheel skeleton we produced reached 110,000 times, far exceeding the corporate standard of 100,000 times, which fully proves its excellent fatigue performance. In addition, mechanical performance tests were conducted, and the results showed that the tensile strength was 220MPa and the elongation was 5%. All performances fully meet the strict requirements of automobile steering wheels.
